🔗 Share this article From Praise to Rage: Conservative Response to Epstein File Release is Mixed. Right-leaning responses to the limited release of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light. Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole Administration representatives defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the censorship procedure. Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections While Trump's name and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt serious questions about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater transparency. “People are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and implied that a future Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued. Some Conservative Commentators Rally Behind the Release However, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration. The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured. Yet some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain conservative voices to go on the attack. “This is pretty rich how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer. “New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.” Former President Spokesperson Issues Response Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those documents for months only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement. “The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added. Broader Conservative Comment Remains Muted However, broader discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to pass a law mandating the documents' publication. The commentator, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy binders of materials that included little new data.
