The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like conventional body horror, but within Together lies a profound examination about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when the couple transition from the urban environment to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that come with most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
